DNA Profiling

All of our breeding stock are DNA Profiled by Genetic Science Service as part of the Australian Canine Pedigree Assurance Program (ACPCP).

A full DNA profile is the very long sequence of the forms of genes of an individual. DNA typing is an abbreviated DNA profile based on a number of selected genes (microsatellites) along the DNA strands that are sufficient to distinguish between individuals within the breed – “DNA fingerprints”. International panels of microsatellites are used.

Where the supposed parents and offspring have been DNA typed, it is possible to determine within a high degree of probability whether either or both supposed parents could be excluded as parents of the offspring. For a simplified example of the principle, if, at a particular microsatellite, the supposed sire has AA and the dam has AB but the offspring has BB, then the male is excluded as the sire.
